THE TRADITION OF

K o v a č e v i ć W i n e r y

The Kovačević Winery has nurtured the family tradition of wine production for more than 100 years. Miroslav Kovačević belongs to the third generation of winegrowers and winemakers, in a family where knowledge was passed down and improved from generation to generation. In 2001, he took over and created a modern winery, with the idea of bringing the viticulture and winemaking experiences of his grandfathers into the 21st century with the help of the most modern technology.

Over the years, we have continuously enriched our Winery and cellars with the latest technology, modern equipment and various barrels. This is not only to achieve consistent quality or explore new possibilities, but also because we want to continuously add a new dimension to innovations, ideas and wines and open new oenological horizons. Our next goal is to preserve tradition and return to nature, which inspired us to commit to organic production. Since there is no lull in viticulture and winemaking, we continue our way forward, researching and widely applying biodynamic approaches. As we step boldly into the future, we keep our focus on tradition, with faith in the power of natural processes.

Today, Mr. Kovačević is one of the most prominent winemakers in Serbia, and the wines of the Kovačević Winery have become a symbol of the revival of Serbian winemaking from the second half of the nineties until today.

Grapes represent the essence of wine, and each grain hides a story – from the golden rays of the sun and the bounty of the rain, to the richness of the soil that nourishes it. Each vintage carries with it a unique story about the year in which it was produced. In order to maintain the authenticity and high quality of future grapes, we dedicated ourselves to carefully listening to nature, choosing the path of organic production and biodiversity protection.

As of 2018, all our vineyards are grown according to organic principles. In the implementation of organic practices, we get grapes of the highest quality, but also create an ecosystem in which every element – from plants to insects – is in a harmonious relationship. Our ideas transcend the boundaries of conventional breeding; we strive for biodynamics in order to further strengthen the connection between the vineyard and nature.

As for the future, we focus on innovations that are consistent with traditional methods. We develop strategies that not only enrich the vines, but also help maintain and restore natural resources. Our mission is to create a wine that tells the story of the land, the weather conditions and the passionate work of all participants on this beautiful journey.

Growing vines on Fruška Gora has a long and rich tradition, dating back to the time of the Roman Empire. Although Emperor Domitian banned the cultivation of vines outside Italy, Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, born in Sirmium (today’s Sremska Mitrovica), recognized the unique natural resources of Fruška Gora. He planted the first vine in this area, laying the foundations for future generations of winegrowers and determining the direction of their development.

Fruška Gora wines reached their peak during the reign of Maria Theresa, when Bermet, a sweet flavored wine specific to Fruška Gora, became indispensable at every Austro-Hungarian court.

Today, relying on this rich tradition, we grow vines in accordance with the principles of organic production. Using the natural advantages of Fruška Gora, its terroir and climate, we continue to create wines that reflect the authenticity and purity of this region.

Today’s appearance of Fruška Gora is a vivid reflection of its rich geological history and modern geodynamic processes. In its core are Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, older than 300 million years, as well as Mesozoic sedimentary rocks from the dinosaur period, between 270 and 65 million years old. In addition, Fruška gora contains and Tertiary igneous rocks, including volcanic rocks, as well as various metamorphic formations. On the edges of the mountain, its slopes and foothills, there are Neogene deposits, which come from the time of the Pannonian Sea, as well as various Quaternary formations, created during the Ice Age.

This unique geological diversity creates ideal conditions for organic vine production. The variety of soil, which includes sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, together with specific climatic conditions, provides a rich terroir that directly affects the quality of the grapes.

Organic production on Fruška Gora relies on this natural potential, respecting ecological standards and taking advantage of the soil that has been shaped for millions of years. Our vines, grown on these fertile slopes, reflect the power of nature and the authenticity of the terroir, producing wines that are fully in harmony with the natural richness of Fruška Gora.

"Where vines grow, the climate is paradise."

Fruška gora is located on the border between continental and subcontinental climate. Although it is one of the lower mountains, the climatic conditions become noticeably colder and wetter with the increase in altitude. On the highest peaks of Fruška gora, there is a true mountain climate, with colder winters and refreshingly cool summers.

These specific climatic conditions, combined with its geological characteristics, create an optimal environment for organic grape cultivation, providing an ideal balance between temperature, humidity and sunlight.
